a little background.

Jessica Goldberg spent 10 years in the classroom as a middle school literacy instructor. She went on to coach literacy teachers, serve as the Director of Humanities for a network of middle schools and open a micro Montessori school during the pandemic. Her expertise is in exciting children to read, guiding them to think deeply about what they read and engaging them in meaningful conversations about books.

Book Jacket Collective began as a spark of an idea a few years ago while Jessica was listening to her 4 year old twins, Eddie and Audrey, pause and respond to questions about the books she was reading with them. She started to notice that she had been asking many of the same types of questions she asked while teaching middle school students and that her young kids could keep up. They were used to these conversations! Jessica started paying closer attention to her natural habits while reading with her kids during story time and began dreaming of sharing these effective techniques with other parents. She knew parents could learn to read like a reading teacher and that their children's reading skills would soar.

So why does reading comprehension matter and why is it worth working on consistently? We know that it is a part of every aspect of school and beyond - from reading articles and books, following directions, analyzing author's purpose in videos and solving word problems in math class. Being able to understand and evaluate text and speech is a critical life skill and one that develops slowly across many years of practice. Schools alone can't provide the amount of practice children need to become deep readers and thinkers. The beauty of Book Jacket Collective is that the strategies you will be taught can be applied to your normal story time routine.
